About Event

Harbours blockaded and Moray's grain trade brought to a standstill. A sheriff and 60 special constables beseiged in a Burghead inn. The same sheriff overpowered by an Elgin crowd who compel him to open the town's jail and let a prisoner go free. A force of 140 heavily armed soldiers confronted by 'the whole female population of Garmouth'.

These were just some of the Moray outcomes of the crisis that gripped Scotland in the months following the 1846 loss of the country's potato crop.
